Honors Teacher of the Year and Beacon Award Nominees

On Wednesday, members of the Chillicothe Education Foundation, community members,
and both Beacon Award and Teacher of the Year nominees and their families gathered at Ed
Milbank's home for the annual Teacher of the Year Awards. School staff, building administrators and new superintendent for the 2019-2020 school year, Dan Wiebers,
also attended the event. In late fall of 2018, the nominees for the both Teacher of the Year and Beacon Award were named during a monthly school
board meeting, and the winners were announced during an awards recognition event for Chillicothe RII staff in December.

Stacy Surber was named 2018 Teacher of the Year after having worked the last 12 years as a science teacher at Chillicothe High School.
The Teacher of the Year winner selected from nominees from each building and has been presented in the Chillicothe School District for 27 years.

The Beacon Award is presented to a member of the support staff at the Chillicothe Schools after each building nominates one person and a winner is selected from the nominations. This
year's Beacon Award Winner is Middle School Secretary Jeanette Johnson.
Johnson has been with the district for 24 years. She has worked in the
superintendent's office, Garrison School, and has spent summers working in nearly every building during summer school. She has spent most of her career working in the middle school.
The Beacon Award winner receives $300, and each nominee receives $100 from the Chillicothe Educational Foundation.

The Chillicothe Education Foundation was established in 1992, and has sponsored the Teacher of the year Award since then. Each school in the district nominates a teacher for the award, and the award winner is selected by a panel of judges and receives $1500 in cash and $1000 for education items to be used within the
classroom from the Chillicothe Education Foundation. Award nominees receive $500 cash and $1000 for education supplies, equipment,
or professional development.
Teacher of the Year nominees included: Shelly Falconer. Heather Mc-Graw, Andrea Beck, Laurinda Davidson and Susan
Meyers. Beacon Award nominees included: Cindy Glidewell, Cinda Maasdam, Amanda Hall, Debra Shafer and Justin Alexander.

On Friday, during of a gathering of their peers at the Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center, Stacy Surber was named the Chillicothe R-II School
District's 2018 Teacher of the Year, and Jeannette Johnson was named the 2018 Chillicothe R-II School
District's Beacon Award winner.

Stacy Surber was named 2018 Teacher of the Year after having worked the last 12 years as a science teacher at Chillicothe High School. She has been an educator a total of 18 years.
The Teacher of the Year winner selected from nominees from each building and has been presented in the Chillicothe School District for 27 years.

Johnson said she not only serves as school secretary but puts together the yearbook.
Johnson said she has been nominated for the award three times.

The finalists for the 2018 Beacon Awards and Teacher of the Year have been announced by the Chillicothe School District.
The finalists were selected from nominations by their peers at each building. The awards will be presented on December 7,
2018, at 2 pm.
